The Language of Work

What’s in a word?
There is a major difference between the words job and career.
A job is a distinct period of employment while a career is a path made up of a job, or a series of jobs, that a person builds on throughout his or her lifetime.
You will find these two words throughout the Work Without Limits website.
There are other words and terms that people with disabilities and their families will encounter as they explore employment opportunities. These include, among others:
- job coaches and job coaching
- job shadowing
- supported employment
- natural supports
- person-centered planning

You will also learn about several state and federal programs to help people with disabilities, including:
- One-Stop Career Centers
- employment service providers
- vocational rehabilitation
- SSI, SSDI
Don’t be overwhelmed by this new language. Work Without Limits contains the information you need to learn the language, find additional help and information, and work towards getting a job and following your career goals.
