What are my options?
Here are some things to consider when identifying your transportation options:
Your Own Vehicle
• Do you have a driver’s license?
o If not, can you get a driver’s license?
o Do you have a vehicle or have access to a vehicle?
o Are you able to buy a vehicle (possibly using a PASS for the down payment)?
Mass Transit
• Can mass transit take you to your job?
o Could you learn how to take mass transit?
Cab
• Would you take a cab to work?
Walking and Biking
• Is the job within walking distance? Biking distance? Moped distance?
Carpooling and Employer Resources
• How do your co-workers get to work?
• Does your employer offer transportation resources?
• Are there other companies nearby where employees take a similar route?
Someone Who Could Drive You
• Is someone available to drive you to and from work?
o People you live with?
o Family?
o Residential staff?
o Neighbors?
o Others?
• If you can identify a driver but no vehicle, could a vehicle be purchased (possibly using a PASS for the down payment), for someone else to drive you?
Finding a Driver
• If you don’t know anyone who could drive you, could you find a driver?
o Where would you advertise?
Newspaper? Local colleges? Stores? Senior centers? Civic groups? Church bulletins? Internet?
Transportation Services
• Is paratransit available?
• Are there other transportation services available?
Brainstorming Other Ideas
• Who can help you brainstorm ideas about transportation?
o People you live with?
o Friends?
o Family members?
o Neighbors?
o Counselors?
o Other professionals?
o Other community members?
o Members of groups you are part of?
Paying for Transportation
• Are you eligible for reduced fare programs?
• If you receive Social Security benefits, have you investigated using the PASS or IRWE work incentives to help cover the costs of commuting?
