Justine's Advice
For Job Seekers with Disabilities:
"We are not our diagnosis, and we are not our past."
For Employers Seeking to Hire Individuals with Disabilities:
"Just because someone has a disability doesn't mean they can't be a wonderful person for your team."
Justine
Social Security wasn't meant to be a permanent solution for me. I'm grateful for the opportunity to be able to receive it, but I was ready to work.
Challenges
One of my biggest challenges was managing my anxiety around the interview process and building confidence in myself. Fortunately, I had a strong support system that encouraged me to take the leap and apply. To overcome my fears, I had to push past the hesitation and dive in—like ripping off a band-aid!
Support
When I started looking for a job, I found Work Without Limits from the Social Security Ticket to Work website. My Work Without Limits benefits counselor provided support on how to navigate income verification for Social Security and transition off of Social Security benefits to full-time work. All of this was provided with kindness and no judgment.
The Department of Mental Health also helped me a lot and is where I learned about peer support and Kiva Centers.
HIRED!
I was hired as a Peer Support Specialist at Kiva Center’s Juniper Respite House, where I provide emotional support, guidance and mentorship, advocacy, and crisis intervention for individuals facing mental health, substance use disorder challenges, and trauma. This role has not only allowed me to help others but has also been instrumental in my own growth. Through this experience, I’ve learned the importance of setting healthy boundaries and recognizing when to seek support for myself.
My Goal: is to continue to grow in the peer support field and to continue to grow in confidence.
